Tom M looking cool skiing with the British Disabled Ski Team as an invitational athlete .
Tom spent 2 weeks with the BDST in Austria this August. We wish Tom all the best in his quest to become a champion skier!
Many thanks for your interest in Adaptive Skiing with Solent Ski Club (SSC).
We are a Southampton based self-governing ski club, run entirely by volunteers, with Affiliated Membership of Snowsport England. www.snowsportengland.org.uk/
We aim to deliver high quality ski teaching and guidance as a means of providing greater independence and enjoyment for skiers with disabilities. The Club also aims to develop the skiing knowledge and skills of all Club members.
We use BASI Qualified Ski Instructors, Ski Guides trained to SSCD levels (originally BSCD), and many other qualified, and non-qualified Helpers.
We meet on the second Saturday of every month (except Aug) at the Alpine Centre, Sports Centre, Bassett, Southampton. SO16 7AY. from 12:00 midday to 2:00pm.
Visit www.activenation.org.uk for information and directions.
You are most welcome to join us at any session. It's best if you canlet one of us know that you will be skiing with us so that we can expect you - about a day or two before the session is best.
For Skiers with a disability the first visit can be a 'taster' session, it costs £3 per person and you will get the chance to try skiing sometime during our 2 hour session - probably for around 30 - 45 mins. All ski equipment is provided, including a mandatory ski helmet and our own specialist ski equipment if required. Don't forget long sleeves, ski socks and gloves! Weatherproof clothing might also be required as we ski in all weathers!
*As we rely totally on volunteers to act as Guides and Helpers we cannot guarantee that a 'taster' will be possible at every session.
*Please also understand that members of Solent SC are not be able to assist with wheelchair transfers that may involve lifting - clients must provide their own means to transfer.
After this initial 'taster' session you will have to become a full member of Solent Ski Club to continue skiing with us. All adult members may be asked to apply for a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. DBS checks can be arranged and submitted by the Solent SC Welfare Officer.
New membership applications must be received at least 5 days in advance of any ski session to validate the insurance cover offered by Snowsport England.
Skiing costs £6 per 2 hour session or part session.
Helpers and Guides are asked for a nominal £2 per session or part session to ensure registration.
We do encourage family members and friends to join in with our skiers with a disability, this would normally mean acting as a Helper or a Skiing Helper. (You must be a member to do this)
Please note: Skiers must always be supervised - we do not allow family members or friends ‘free skiing’ at any time – recreational skiing is available by booking direct with the Alpine Centre.
It's best if you plan to arrive at the ski slope at 11:45am to allow time to register and get kitted up.
If you require direct access to the foot of the ski slope because of a disability you will have to meet at the automatic barrier by the main entrance to the Sports Centre at 11:30am where someone from Solent SC will let you thru'. Please do not be late as we can’t wait for you.
The Alpine Centre in conjunction with Southampton City Council will not issue barrier passes to SSC Members.
If you are travelling any distance please check on our website or with the Alpine Centre that we will be running a Solent SC session - very occasionally the Alpine Centre will postpone or re-arrange one of our sessions.
We hope to meet you at one of our ski sessions soon.
Please visit our Downloads page for the paperwork that needs to be completed before your visit - it'll save you lots of time on the day!
